Prof. Innocent Chiluwa (HOD)

You are warmly welcome to the Department of Languages and General Studies. The Department is home to a lively cast of happy and exciting people working in an environment of peace, inclusiveness and productively. We are dedicated to teaching, learning and research and we drive excellence as we groom our students to understand the true meaning of success beyond the classroom.

Indisputably, language is the hub of any human society, which sustains the wheels of communication and national cohesion; it is indispensable to social interaction and central to service delivery in all sectors of human endeavour, information and communication technology inclusive. It is clear therefore that national development and language are undoubtedly inseparable.

In addition to its role as Nigeria’s official language, English is a medium of skills and knowledge acquisition in Nigeria. These roles then justify the concerted efforts by all stakeholders to bolster its teaching and learning in Nigerian schools as well as institutions of higher learning.

Since its inception, the Department of Languages and General Studies has turned out a great number of graduates who today are highflying individuals in their various careers within and beyond the shores of this country. It is exciting to know that graduates of English are equipped to explore career interests in Communication and Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising, Public information and Research, Front Desk Management, Immigration and Police Services, Intelligence Services, Education, Diplomatic Relations and International Affairs among many others. Our Department has maintained a healthy relationship with several industries over the years, and as an institutional practice has sustained the Town and Gown interactions, which involves hosting professionals in the various industries who have the background in English/language and communication to hold seminars with our students, sharing their experiences and successes as a way of motivating and inspiring the young minds.

The excellent performance of our graduates is linked with the world-class expertise and professionalism of our faculty members, who are qualified academics of the various cadres. For instance, one of our professors is a recipient of the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s post-doctoral fellowship and has been a visiting professor at the University of Freiburg in Germany.  He has also served as External Examiner to several universities overseas, including the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The Department is well-equipped to run English and Foreign Languages programmes. We have a standard modern language laboratory and state of the art teaching equipment. Our classes are moderate in terms of number of students per class, and there is a mutual teacher-student relationship and sound mentorship framework.

May the Almighty God make your stay here extremely fruitful.
