The English Programme took off in the 2002/2003 academic session in the then Department of Languages and Mass Communication, with the late Professor E. Adegbija as the Head of Department. Mass Communication and French were the other two Programmes in that Department. The English Programme was excised from the Department at the beginning of the 2004/2005 academic session and housed in the newly established Department of English and Literary Studies with Dr. C.O. Awonuga as the Acting Head of Department. The French Programme was also domiciled in the new Department. A separate Department of French was created in the 2007/2008 academic session, and Professor E.N. Kwofie was appointed the Head of Department. This Department was merged with the Department of English and Literary Studies at the end of the 2008/2009 session to form the Department of Languages. At the commencement of the 2014/2015 academic session, the Department was restructured to form the Department of Languages and General Studies. Dr. S. T. Owoeye is currently the Head of Department.
